Management must maintain a log of these informal provisions to understand the true cost of operations. Even if no cash changes hands, the unbilled contribution represents a hidden subsidy that will eventually stop. Knowing the value of these gifts allows the company to plan for the time when it must pay market rates for the same services.
Future Recovery
Providers sometimes expect to be reimbursed for their inputs once the company becomes profitable. An unbilled contribution can be treated as a deferred liability. This expectation should be documented early.
Dilution Effect
Issuing shares to settle these old debts can change the ownership structure of the firm. If the value of the unbilled contribution is high, the resulting equity grant might significantly reduce the stakes of other investors. Clear valuation of the original input is the only way to ensure the share issuance is proportional to the benefit received.
